It is projected that up to 80% of the American adult population will experience lower back pain at least once in their lifetime. Many of these adults experience acute pain from improper movements in their daily work or fitness life and many more may be experiencing chronic pain due to the continuation of improper movements from their fitness and work environment as well.

According to the National Institutes of Health, acute lower back pain is when there is a slight disruption in the components of the back and how they move for only a few days, whereas chronic back pain lasts for more than 3 months.  Lower back pain is caused by injury to a muscle or ligament.

Though lower back pain is very common, these symptoms can be managed with proper education from your local physical therapist. At Myofit Clinic we want to help you identify what constitutes lower back pain.

In the United States, lower back pain is the most common cause for job-related disability and the leading reason for most missed days at work as stated by the National Institutes of Health.

What are these causes that are leading to so many adults having lower back pain?  National Institutes of Health identified a few common causes that may be the reason:

  • Sprains and strains – Overstretching or tearing in ligaments or muscle and this can be caused by twisting or improper lifting.
  • Intervertebral disk degeneration – Mainly occurs with aging and is when the rubbery disc loses integrity and cushion resulting in loss of flexibility.
  • Radiculopathy – Inflammation to a spinal nerve root.
  • Sciatica – A form of radiculopathy caused by compression of a large nerve that travels through the buttocks and extends down the back of the leg.
  • Ruptured disk – Usually occurs when the intervertebral disc becomes compressed and swells outward or ruptures.
  • A traumatic injury –  An injury to the tendons, ligaments or muscle that could be caused by playing sports, car accidents or from falling.
