Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) at MyoFit Clinic

If you’ve ever dealt with stubborn muscle tightness, lingering pain after an injury, or scar tissue that just never seemed to fully heal, there’s a good chance the underlying issue is soft tissue dysfunction — and it’s more common than most people realize. Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, or IASTM, is one of the most effective hands-on techniques we use at MyoFit to get to the root of that problem and start real, measurable healing.

What Is IASTM?

IASTM is a research-supported manual therapy technique that uses specially designed, ergonomically shaped instruments to detect and treat restrictions in the body’s soft tissues — including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. These tools, typically made from stainless steel and contoured to match the body’s natural curves, allow your therapist to apply precise, controlled pressure to affected areas with a level of accuracy that hands alone simply can’t match. As the instrument glides across the tissue, it also gives your therapist valuable feedback, allowing them to identify areas of restriction, adhesion, or scar tissue that may be limiting your movement or contributing to your pain.

What Does It Do for Your Body?

When soft tissue is injured, whether from a sudden trauma, repetitive stress, or surgery, the body’s repair process can sometimes leave behind disorganized scar tissue and fascial adhesions. These restrictions reduce blood flow, limit mobility, and keep the nervous system in a state of low-grade irritation that perpetuates pain. IASTM works by introducing controlled mechanical stimulation to those areas, which triggers a localized inflammatory response — the same process your body uses to heal. This initiates a fresh wave of tissue remodeling, increases blood flow to the area, breaks down dysfunctional scar tissue, and ultimately restores more normal tissue structure and movement. Research has consistently shown that IASTM produces meaningful improvements in range of motion, pain reduction, strength, and overall function in patients with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions.

What Can IASTM Help With?

IASTM is a versatile treatment that has clinical support for addressing a broad spectrum of conditions, including:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • Tendinopathies (Achilles, patellar, rotator cuff, tennis elbow, etc.)
  • IT band syndrome
  • Muscle strains and soft tissue injuries
  • Post-surgical scar tissue
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Chronic bursitis
  • Restricted range of motion and joint stiffness
  • Impaired muscle recruitment and movement patterns
  • Chronic pain, both orthopedic and neurologic in origin

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your IASTM session at MyoFit will begin with your therapist assessing the area of concern and discussing your symptoms and goals. A lubricant is applied to the skin to allow the instruments to glide smoothly, and your therapist will then work methodically over the treatment area using controlled strokes and pressure. Most patients describe the sensation as similar to having a foam roller or deep massage applied with more precision — it can feel intense in areas of significant restriction, but it should not be painful. Your therapist will communicate with you throughout and adjust pressure based on your response.

Sessions typically last 15 to 30 minutes, and IASTM is most often paired with targeted stretching and strengthening exercises immediately following treatment to reinforce the gains made during the session. It’s normal to notice some mild redness or temporary soreness in the treated area afterward — this is simply your body’s healing response at work and typically resolves within a day or two. Many patients notice improved movement and a sense of looseness in the area even after their first session, with the most significant results building over a series of treatments.

If restricted movement, chronic pain, or unresolved soft tissue problems have been holding you back, IASTM may be exactly what your body needs. Contact us or stop by the clinic to find out if it’s the right fit for your recovery.
